Slave Pens

Slave pens have played an important role in the domestic slave trade. From the outside, these pens look like neglected barns. But on the inside, the decaying structures hold a hidden piece of Grenadian history. These cramped one-room jails tell the story of a generation of slaves who were kept inside to be taken to the auction block to provide labor to plantations. These pens provide some evidence of the conditions of the holding areas where enslaved people awaited auction. The slave pens add a poignant memory of Grenada's history.
